Oh English movies how we miss you!

We take a break from our Peruvian mission to talk about something much less important...the movies :)
I know, I know, this is such an unspiritual topic. If you don't like it, sorry. If you don't mind please read on... :)

We moved to Peru in February. We have kids. We have no money. All good reasons as to why we don't go to the movies very often. That being said we LOVE going to the movies. When a superhero movie is released, we are there! If a good Sci-fi (like Star Trek) comes out, we are there! We find a way, we find a babysitter and we go...until now.

Up to about a year and a half ago, movies in Peru have always been subtitled, meaning that the movie play in their original language and are subtitled in Spanish. Jenn and John have always loved going to the movies when they came to Peru to visit Johns family...it was cheap and in English. Until now.  Apparently, movies are becoming a bigger deal here and more Peruvians are starting to go. The demand is up which means Blockbuster hits are being shown Dubbed instead of subtitled. Which means we are out of luck! I have always been a fan and advocate for watching a movie in its original language, even if that means I have to read subtitles. You catch the real emotion, sarcasm and feelings that are trying to be conveyed.

So lets review based on our likes. In the last couple of months the following movies have come out...Iron Man 3, Star Trek and most currently Superman. Not to mention the movies that are coming out Wolverine and more.....All dubbed....gggrrrrrrr!!!! We check the movies every week to see if there HAPPENS to be a showing in English...until now! John did his weekly research looking up the movies and found a showing of Superman in English!!!! Never mind, that it was the midnight showing, never mind that there was a really good chance we wouldn't make it thru a whole movie because one or the other kid isn't sleeping at night. Never mind, that we are in the middle of unpacking a container full of stuff (blog to come). Never mind that our husbands have to work in the morning....It was a movie in ENGLISH....a good one. We were all over that!

Ready for the movie!!!
We tucked our children in to their beds and said a prayer that they would sleep through the night and off we went. 20 minutes later we are in line, excited as children on Christmas day buying out tickets. We buy our popcorn and soda and get in line. Happy as can been. 12:00 am comes and we are still in line. Suddenly, we hear a voice....the movie isn't playing in English or 3D...The digital download hasn't completed downloading....they will only be showing the movie in 2D and dubbed. Those that would like to continue watching the movie will be compensated greatly. Those that don't want to watch it will be reimbursed. WHAT?!?!?! We can't believe this. After 4 months of trying to see a movie in this country and our bubble is burst in a moment because the stinking digital download isn't complete????! Argh! We talk to the lady to make sure that there was no more English viewings, which there wasn't, get a refund and run! We RUN!!!!! We run because we know that 2 minutes away there is another theater playing at the larger mall showing Superman in English at 12:15...Its 12:10 am, we have just enough time. We will miss the previews but that's OK...minor detail in this great movie dilemma we are now in.

Running to the next theater
We get in our cars and drive as fast as we can! We get to the mall and drive in circles....The gates to the mall are ALL closed! How do we get in???? We drive down one way street the wrong way, we drive over speed so fast that I almost give birth the my son multiple time in the car. Finally, we find and a security guard who is able to tell us what gate to go to. We find it and we ask the attendant to let us in. He says no. What? Why? We tell him we are there to see the 12:15 viewing of the movie. He then informs us that the theater stopped selling tickets at 12:00. No one is there to take our money, therefore we can't buy tickets, therefore we can't see the movie, we can't even get in the parking lot. How can they stop selling tickets to a movie 15 minutes BEFORE it starts?!?!?!? Its there. We can almost hear the wind blowing thru the cape of Superman thru the speakers of theater, yet we can't see it.

Stuck at the gate...unable to get in :(
Unbelievable!

4 months of waiting and still we wait. We laughed, maybe even cried a little. We experienced the sadness together. At least we got to do it together. It makes for a good laugh.

We THINK we may still be able to watch it, so we will try again on Tuesday.......

  1. please forgive my yet again Germany reference but it's the only place outside of America we lived for 8 years :) the first time we went "on the economy" to watch a movie we were completely shocked.. it was in German (at least Spanish is pretty) and it was all captioned but you had to pay for and pick a seat they had not begun to do that in America yet, so we were not used to it at all ;) Sorry about your trip. I hope Tuesday pays off for you. Love You all!
